Oil-bath bearings. 20-year design life. |
| Many of the conventional wind turbines are equipped with drip-proof bearings. However these types of bearings usually do not last much more than 2 to 3 years under the natural environment with severe exposure to rain and dust. Loopwing Wind Turbine employs water-proof oil-bath sealed bearings accompanied with a sealing system taken from marine engineering. |

It has been difficult for most wind turbines to use a sealed bearing since it tightly holds a thick shaft so that they create strong frictional resistance and therefore require stronger torque for starting. Loopwing Wind Turbine, on the other, has a much thinner shaft, because Loopwing can achieve high strength without making a shaft thick. Part of the reason is that Loopwing blade is made of thin alluinum alloy and can be much lighter, and also the shaft itself is stably supported at both ends. Thinner shaft means that frictional resistance of a sealed bearing can be minimized and enables to start with a low natural wind while enjoying the durability.
Additionally, the triangle blade of Loopwing has a structure similar to durable Truss. Together, it achieves a 20-year design life. |
