Engineering promotion association progress a development of 2 Mega watts class generator, the world biggest ocean current power generator. Mechanism of the Ocean current energizer is that the power of current (motional energy) generates electricity (electric energy) by rotating the turbines. Energy out put is dependent on the speed of the current and the dimension of the turbines subjected to the power of the current. Diameter of the generator is approximately 50m to generate 2MW. There have been a several challenges to put this power system into practical use such as 1) high cost for manufacturing, 2) 11 meters is the technical limit to use molded blades and 3) durability of fiber-reinforced plasticthe (FRP) in the water in the past. In this project, Loopwing shaped turbine (Loopwing co., ltd invented this technology in 2003) will be employed. Compare to propeller designed turbine, loop shaped turbine reduces comparably large amount of operational cost. With this Loopwing technology, the larger sized turbine can be designed which enables to generate high power out put with high efficiency. In addition to that, this technology enable to bring light weight structure and high durability with it’s easy-manufacturing design that the blades are composed of multiple curbing thin plates on one blade. The 2MW class generator to be developed by Loopwing has a diameter of 33 meters for the turbine, 50 meters for the over all device.
The total amount of the energy which generated by 2MW systems in a year will be 7,600,000kWh, this amount will cover the consumption of the electricity for 21,000 houses. It means 4,218t-CO2 can be saved. Substantiative experiments to verify the effectiveness of the technology with 1/50 scale device has been succeeded to generate 400KW in a water tank.
