Report for Megawatt class Ocean Current energizer systems

The world biggest Ocean Current energizer

Engineering promotion association started basic designing for commercialization of the world largest class (2Mega watts standard output/FR/s ) Ocean Current energizer from 2008. This innovative system is contribution for the new policy by Prime Minster Hatoyama to reduce 25% of CO2 by 2020 compare to its 1990.
Adopted Loopwing technology from Wind turbine mechanism Ocean current renewal energy has advantages in 1)

Enormous amount of potential energy around Japan such as the Kuroshio or Black Current, 2) the least effect on the environment and CO2 emission, 3) stable power out put compare with wind/solar energy. However, in the past, the ocean current energy has its disadvantage in cost ofmanufacturing, effectiveness of power generation and limitation of the length of the blades. To encounter these disadvantages, the Engineering promotion association employed the Loopwing turbine technology inspired from wind turbine design.

Meaningful contribution to reduce CO2 emission

Mechanism of the Ocean current energizer is that the power of current (motional energy) generates electricity (electric energy) by rotating the turbines. Energy out put is dependent on the speed of the current and the dimension of the turbines subjected to the power of the current. Diameter of the generator is approximately 50m to generate 2MW. The total amount of the energy which generated by 2MW systems in a year will be 7,600,000kWh, this amount will cover the consumption of the electricity for 21,000 houses. It means 4,218t-CO2 can be saved.

Undertakings of future

Substantiative experiments to verify the effectiveness of the technology with 1/50 scale device has been succeeded to generate 400KW in a water tank. For the next stage, the committee is formulating basic design of the experimental devices, installation under the sea, maintenance and operational control.
